MBFWA 2013 Designer Q&A: Zambesi

What’s the inspiration behind your spring/summer collection?

Exploring ideas from a personal perspective inspired me to keep the collection clean and simple for spring/summer 2013.

What sort of prints and textures are featured in your upcoming range?
Fabric and texture always play a leading role when creating the collection, and we have developed a new printed check design that features an interesting mix of materials and colours in both the men’s and women’s collections.

In your opinion, what are some of the big trends we can expect to see on the catwalk at MBFWA?
Zambesi create collections with a sense of freedom from trends, and our customer demographic reflects a timelessness and a certain attitude that quietly sets it apart.

What’s your favourite fashion week memory?
One of my favourite memories is meeting Anna Piaggi at our first international show in Sydney in 1997. A mutual friend and show producer, Jennifer Souness introduced us, as they were close friends. This was a very special as Anna took the time to personally view the collection. The lovely thing was that she was always gracious and remembered me whenever our paths crossed.

What are you most looking forward to at fashion week this year?
We love doing shows! The process is always exciting, and whenever we create a collection and don’t do a catwalk show there is always that feeling that something is missing.

What will you be doing after fashion week wraps?
There is little time to rest and reflect after fashion week as it is followed by a busy sales campaign, shooting the catalogue for the on-line store and beginning the process of producing in New Zealand. Between that and the next season I will make time to rest and reflect.
