Alexander Wang Not Taking The Christian Dior Job

Rumours ran rampant yesterday that fashion designer Alexander Wang was set to take over the role of creative director at Christian Dior.

However, it seems the job is still up for grabs, with industry experts speculating that the designer is far too inexperienced in couture to take over the role.

"The young streetwear and sportswear-specialist has never tackled anything approaching couture before," explained Vogue UK, the publication that actually started the rumour.

It seems instead that LVMH is not interested in Alexander Wang for a position at Dior, but remains interested in the sportswear designer for other reasons.

"Perhaps the company is considering making a bid to add Wang’s business to their luxury fashion portfolio," explained New York Magazine.

Although Marc Jacobs has remained the front-runner for the Dior job over the last few months, a source close to LVMH says the company is finding it difficult to make a decision.

"For Dior, it's a pretty tricky situation, as the three frontrunners really can't take the job. Haider Ackermann is said to be 'way too edgy' for Dior; Marc Jacobs wanted the job a lot, but LVMH wants him to stick with Vuitton; and Riccardo Tisci simply refused, saying that he was feeling more than comfortable with the job at Givenchy. So nobody's taking over so far."

Meanwhile, New York Magazine speculates that Wang could be poached for another design house at LVMH.

"If Jacobs does go to Dior, some shuffling amongst LVMH's top designers would surely take place, in which case Wang may might be tapped for another house (Céline comes to mind, since Phoebe Philo is considered the front-runner for Jacobs's replacement at Louis Vuitton)."

Meanwhile, some blogs remain firm in their belief that Jacobs will eventually step into the role at Christian Dior, with ology.com asking, "Anyone else think LVMH is just covering up Marc Jacobs' appointment until the designer himself is ready to announce? I'd put money on it."
