She was the willowy model turned celebrity stylist who parlayed her elegant sense of style into a career as a fashion designer – and yesterday L'Wren Scott was found dead in her New York apartment.

Scott, who was 49, was known for dressing some of the world's most famous women. "She was known for gowns with an hour-glass silhouette – her designs were very tailored, very womanly," says marie claire fashion editor Aileen Marr. "She used the very best fabrications, and workmanship."

Scott, who grew up in Utah, was adopted and raised by Mormon parents. After finishing high school she went to Paris to work as a model and went on to work for some of the world's most storied fashion houses. In the ’90s she became well known as one of the first celebrity stylists. Aileen Marr, who was working in the US as a stylist at the time, remembers that, "whenever celebrities made the best-dressed lists, it seemed as though L'Wren was always the stylist behind the celebrity".

In 2006 Scott launched her first collection as a clothing designer. By this time she was also romantically linked to Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger. In 2011 Scott released a range of high-end handbags.

Over the years the designer won legions of celebrity fans – from Nicole Kidman to Reese Witherspoon – for her flattering, elegant designs. Scott’s success was undoubtedly down to her empathy with her clients.

"I've never met a woman who thinks they've got a good enough figure – however perfect they look," Scott told one magazine. "Which is sad, because no-one else can see these perceived flaws; they're entirely internal. But I feel I've succeeded if I can design a dress that you can always rely on, that will stand the test of time, that becomes like a dear friend.”
