The February 2010 edition of marie claire, featuring a naked and un-airbrushed Jennifer Hawkins on the cover, made the front page of newspapers, kept talkback radio buzzing, featured heavily on TV news programs and drew comment from the likes of Donald Trump to then deputy Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. The cover generated more than $15 million in PR coverage, showcasing how much the issue resonated with the Australian public, and making the issue a sell-out.
The shortlist for the inaugural reader-driven Maggie awards, which celebrate and reward the best magazine covers of the year, has been chosen by a panel of media savvy judges including Ita Buttrose, Lisa Wilkinson and Deborah Hutton.
"A really good magazine cover is like seeing a leader in action," said Buttrose. "You just know; you look at them and think 'Wow'."
