Joan Rivers has gone to extreme lengths to protest the removal of her book from shelves at Costco.

The comedian and reality star came face to face with the long arm of the law yesterday after she staged an unauthorised, and unannounced, reading from her new book, I Hate Everyone...Starting With Me, at a Costco in Burbank, California, to protest the discount retailer’s decision to ban the title.

Arriving at the store armed with a megaphone and wearing her trademark enormous black sunglasses, Rivers signed copies of her banned book and handcuffed herself to a shopping trolley before police arrived to escort her off the premises.

The Fashion Police host resorted to the guerrilla tactics after the wholesale supermarket chain refused to stock her New York Times bestseller because of inappropriate language used in fake blurbs on the back cover.

“This is a store that sells 300 rolls of toilet paper at the same time, and I say any customer that buys 300 rolls of toilet paper deserves a funny book to sit on the toilet and read,” said Rivers.

No criminal charges were filed against the 79 year old.
