What are the key hair trends right now?

We're seeing a lot of that romantic, old-Hollywood screen siren look. People like Dita Von Teese have made that glamorous style really popular and I think it's also a reaction against poker-straight, perfectly-ironed hair.

Girls now want to look super glamorous. You used to only do eyes or lips, but now it's eyes, lips, cheeks - everything. And hair has to follow that. It's about being feminine.

Also really popular is big hair. Lady Di styles and fauxhawks (when hair is pinned up into an imitation mohawk) are making a comeback with girls under 25. But for those 35 to 40, the question is more about getting hair in the best condition possible and maintaining lush, healthy locks.

What are the colour trends you're seeing?

Now it's about even, all-over colour - stripes and patchy colour are over. You used go to the salon and your colour would go through two or three processes - you'd have highlights, a semi and a tint - but now people are slowing down and choosing a single colour not too far away from their natural look.

What are the key shades?

It's not that ultra blonde anymore, it's more like an amber, softer tone. It's not icy and it's not that more severe black, white or chocolate tones - the colours that are popular now are more mid tones.

Brown is a big look. A lot of girls I work with are dying their hair back to brown and I think that has a lot to do with shine. Everybody wants healthy, gorgeous hair and it's a lot easier to keep brown hair looking strong and full than maintaining that bedazzling blonde.

From Tuesday, September 1 to Friday, September 4, Kevin.Murphy stylists will also be running workshops on the latest looks and trends.
