Dame Judi Dench Calls For The End Of Animal Testing

Dame Judi Dench has signed a petition calling for the end of animal testing by 2013.

The star joins celebrity activists Mary McCartney, Leona Lewis, Ricky Gervais and Spice Girl Mel C in a bid to urge European Union politicians to keep their pledge to end animal testing by 2013.

"Using animals to test cosmetics is cruel and should be stopped," said Dench. "These days there are other means of testing which do not involve animal suffering."

50,000 consumers have also come forward to sign the 'Cruelty-Free 2013' petition, a program which began in 2003 with the aim of making animal testing illegal within a 10 year period.

The daughter of Sir Paul McCartney, Mary McCartney, said that animal testing was entirely unnecessary, and was hoping for the EU to keep its promise.

"Subjecting animals to pain and suffering just so that we can produce a new shade of lipstick or eyeshadow is simply cruel and unnecessary in this day and age," McCartney commented.
