There's nothing like a hint of sparkly eyeshadow to add a flirty twist to a glam night out. Jan Thomas, chief make-up artist for Max Factor says, "To make your eye colour pop, choose a colour from the opposite side of the colour wheel." He adds that blue and green eyes work best with warmer shades like golds and pinks, while hazel and brown eyes benefit from cooler shades, like green and blue.

However, he warns that "mature women should avoid frost that emphasises fine wrinkles on their lids and around their eyes." They should, instead, go for a soft shimmer, like Max Factor Colour Perfection Duo Eyeshadow in Moonshine Meadow, $16.95.

For long-lasting, crease-proof eyeshadow, use a base like Clinique Touch Base For Eyes, $29. "Dampen the eyeshadow pot by breathing on it before applying," adds Thomas. "This will stop it from flaking." Using a small brush, pat the shadow onto your lid from the lash line to the socket, then blend to the brow. To finish, he suggests a black eyeliner along the lash line to vamp up the look and a few coats of mascara to curled lashes.
