STEP ONE
Twice daily (and after exercising), wash away dirt, sebum, cosmetics and micro-organisms with a mild, soap-free, pH-balanced liquid cleanser. Gently massage the cleanser over moist skin, focusing on the oiliest areas, then rinse with warm water. Avoid scrubs and astringents that will irritate the skin.

STEP TWO
Patience is a virtue, advises Dr JoAnn See, dermatologist and co-chair of the expert advice group All About Acne (www.acne.org.au): "Topical treatments may take six to eight weeks before you start seeing a difference." She suggests creams containing salicylic acid, glycolic acid or benzoyl peroxide applied to spot-prone areas. "Hormonal acne is often inflammatory, so avoid harsh treatments."

STEP THREE
For every day, look for an oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturiser with SPF 12-20 (daily use of a higher SPF may block pores). "When trying a new product, use it sparingly, on a cool, dry face," adds Dr See. "Apply on alternative nights until you can tolerate it nightly and then build up to twice daily."
