Shape Up
Wipe off old varnish with a nail polish remover - we like ModelCo Nail Liquid Buds, $12.50 - then file your nails. Use a fine-grained file, such as Manicare Nail Shapers, $4.25 for two, and steer clear of those rough, sandpaper-like versions, as they're made especially for acrylics and are much too harsh for natural nails. And the shape? Celebrity manicurist Christina Fitzgerald advises that while it's best to keep nails shorter to suit strong shades in winter, you can keep them a little longer in summer to show off those tropical hues.Get Even
Create a smooth foundation for your new colour by gently buffing your nails. "Buffing stimulates the blood flow to the base of your nail; this in turn will make them grow faster and become healthier," says Fitzgerald. Not only that, it's an essential step if you're planning to use bright of metalic shades of polish as these options highlight any ridges or unevenness in your nail - buffing before you paint will smooth out the surface.Start Smart
A base coat is essential to protect nails from staining, while allowing your chosen colour to last longer. Fitzgerald explains that it also makes the painting process a lot easier. Don't be tempted to substitute your clear polish here - a base-specific product is stickier, which helps the colour you're about to apply to adhere to your nails bettter, extending the life of your manicure. Apply just one thin coat to speed up the drying time.Colour In
Now you're ready to paint. Begin by brushing on one sheer coat before applying another. "Load up your brush with polish and use lots of painting strokes," recommends Fitzgerald. "Forget the three-stroke method - it's an old wives' tale!" Stop at two thin coats of colour as any more will prevent the polish drying properly, making smudges and dents more likely. If you're not confident wtih your own handiwork, opt for a paler shade of varnish as mistakes will be less obvious.Gloss Over
Finish off your nails with a slick of glassy top coat that will guard against chips and cracks, while boosting lustre. Fitzgerald says a good-quality product will keep your nails shiny and protect them against the ravages of daily wear and tear. Try Revlon ColorStay Top Coat, $12.50. If you're in a hurry, speed up the drying process by applying a spritz of quick-dry spray afterwards.Prices and availability correct as at December 6, 2006.
