"The nail plate is normally resistant to stains, but if damaged or injured, it can become more absorbent to dyes and chemicals," explains Doug Schoon, president of science and technology for Creative Nail Design. Gently smooth away discolouration with a Cutex Nail Buffing Block, $3.95. Then, encourage healthy new growth by massaging Creative Nail Design SolarOil, $22.95, into your cuticles once a day. If the stain still remains after a light buff, don't continue until it has disappeared, as this will only weaken your nail further. Conceal the discolouration with a natural-looking nail polish, and don't forget to apply a good base coat, such as Clarins Perfect Nails Smoothing Base, $28, to prevent future stains.

In-salon SOS: Why not book yourself in for a professional manicure to pamper and restore your hands and cuticles - then you'll be able to take over the weekly maintenance from there.
