The look: "We're seeing so many different looks with short hair: crops with a lot of length and weight at the top; undercutting, which is becoming more mainstream; and the bob is always popular," explains Richard Mannah, international artistic director of TONI&GUY. He adds that jaw-skimming styles can be anything from razor-sharp - great for round faces - to having lots of texture, with soft, sexy layers that are perfect for softening angles. Very short crops work best on oval face shapes.

What you need to know: "To get the right look, you need the right products," says Mannah. He also suggests regular trips to the salon every four to six weeks to maintain your new style.

Essential tool kit: Add shine with Redken Vinyl Glam 02 Mega Shine Spray, $28, or for subtle definition, try label.m Soufflé, $34.95. Garnier Fructis Style Surf Hair Texturising Spray, $8.85, is great for adding texture.

Prices and availability correct at July 1, 2009.
