DEFINITION
Foundation is applied to the face to conceal blemishes and even out the skin tone, creating an even base for any other make-up to be applied. Foundation also provides a protection layer between the skin's surface and dirt and other pollutants in the environment.
DESCRIPTION
Foundations are available in many forms and consistencies, and offer many different benefits for the wearer. Ask your Pharmacy's cosmetician to establish which foundation best suits your needs and your skin type. DRY AND MATURE SKIN: A foundation that offers a more moisturising base is best suited for this skin type. Usually a liquid or cream is selected. Foundations are now available which contain vitamins such as A and E, which are beneficial as they treat the condition of the skin as well as playing their role as a foundation. It is recommended that a suitable moisturiser is applied to the face 10 to 15 minutes prior to applying the foundation. This allows the moisturiser to be absorbed leaving the skin supple. The foundation will glide on easily and feel more comfortable. Ask your cosmetician to show you the ranges of suitable moisturisers. NORMAL SKIN: Choosing a foundation for this skin type depends on the finish you wish to achieve e.g., a matt or dewy finish with high or light coverage. Ask your beauty therapist for advice on choosing a foundation to suit you. OIL/COMBINATION SKIN: An oil-free or water based foundation is recommended because it does not clog the pores or increase the oil content on the surface of the skin. The foundation will wear longer and feel more comfortable on the skin. A face powder applied after the foundation has been used is ideal for removing any shine that may appear on the surface of the foundation throughout the day. Ask your cosmetician to select the colour of the face powder to match the foundation you have chosen.
The following are the types of foundation available in pharmacy:- LIQUID FOUNDATIONS Many varieties are available offering a wide range of benefits including the ability to offer semi-matt or dewy finish, oil-free or moisturising benefits. They have light, medium or high coverage and sometimes include a sunscreen. Liquids can be found formulated for any skin type. CREAM FOUNDATIONS Very emollient base, making them suitable for dry, mature skin types. They generally have a dewy finish and offer a medium to high coverage. POWDER CREAM FOUNDATIONS These are available in oil-free formulations or moisturising bases, therefore making them suitable for any skin type. The main benefit with these foundations is that they are a foundation and powder in one, offering the wearer a very finished mattle look in one application. They are highly suitable for those who want a quick and easy to apply foundation. MOUSSE FOUNDATIONS Suitable for most skin types and easy to apply. They offer a light to medium coverage. CAKE FOUNDATIONS A waterbased foundation which is applied with a damp sponge. The wearer has the option of wearing a light coverage or can apply more to obtain greater coverage. These foundations are most suitable for oily skins but can be used by any skin type and they offer a matte finish. TINT FOUNDATIONS Offer a very sheer, natural finish. Generally consist of a moisturising base but can be worn on any skin type. These foundations are often found containing a sunscreen, making them very suitable for outdoor wear.
When selecting a foundation it is important to advise the cosmetician of exactly what you are looking for so that the correct foundation with a suitable colour can be chosen. The following are some of the finishes and qualities foundation can offer:- MATT FINISH Offers a powdered, non-shiny finish. Ideal for oily skin types. SEMI-MATTE FINISH Offers a non-shiny finish but has a moisturised texture making it comfortable to wear. Recommended for normal-oily or combination skin types. A powder can be applied over the top to remove any excess shine through. DEWY FINISH Recommended for dry, mature skins as it gives the skin a moist look and can help dull skins to look glowing and fresh. A face powder can be applied over the top. WATERPROOF Ideal for sportspersons who choose to wear foundation. Offers long-lasting wear for active lifestyles. NON-COMODOGENIC (NON-CLOGGING) These formulas will not clog the pores, making them ideal for normal-oily or oily skin types. HYPO-ALLERGENIC Foundations that have hypo-allergenic written on their labels are less likely to cause an irritation to sensitive skins as they don't use ingredients which contain highly known allergens.
NOTE: Foundations are used to enhance a complexion, hide blemishes, and even out skin tone. For the best foundation base your skin is the best asset to have. Ask the cosmetician to advise the best suitable skin regime for your skin type.
PHARMACIST'S ADVICE
Ask the advice of your Pharmacist or Cosmetitician. 1) The Cosmetician can select the correct foundation for you. 2) Ask your cosmetician for a facial so you can experience the product on your skin. You can also take the opportunity to try other make-up products. 3) Face powders are available to finish your foundation. These will help it to wear longer as well. 4) Concealers and neutralisers are also available to use under your foundation to hide those hard to conceal blemishes, and counteract skin discolourings such as sallowness and birthmarks. Always use one shade lighter than your foundation when applying a concealer. Ask your cosmetician for advice. 5) Foundation is best applied with an applicator. There are several available to be used with different foundations. Ask for advice. 6) Foundation and other make-up products can only be removed properly with a make-up solvent and a cleanser. Ask your cosmetician to select one for your skin type.
