Anne Hathaway has fought back against false reports regarding her drastic weight loss and dieting for her role in the musical Les Misérables.

In the musical, Hathaway plays heroine Fantine, a sickly and impoverished French prostitute.

Hathaway lost more than seven kilos from her already slender physique to deliver a convincing performance of the character. She also cut her long locks into a pixie crop for the role.

Reports from various sources claimed her drastic dieting consisted of a 500-calorie diet of radishes and hummus, as well as extreme detoxing.

“What gets annoying is when people make up things that aren’t true, which is just dangerous,” the actor said in a recent Yahoo7 U.K interview.

"When they [journalists] write things about the weight loss I did for Les Mis and they publish a diet that had nothing to do with what I did and people believe it to be true I think that's really dangerous."

When asked where these sources come up with their information, the actress laughed and said, “They’re imaginations.... Facts have never mattered less.”

Many actors have famously undergone body transformations to suffer for their craft.

Christian Bale lost 28 kilos for his role in The Machinist (2004) reducing his body mass to 54 kilos, living on 275 calories a day for more than four months.

The already slender Natalie Portman lost nine kilos to play a ballerina in Black Swan (2010), training for five hours a day, seven days a week.

Tom Hanks lost 23 kilos for Cast Away (2000) whilst Russell Crowe went the other way and gained 28 kilos for his role in Body of Lies (2008).

Hathaway’s comments on these “dangerous” reports on diet and weight loss are warranted.

It’s important to realize is that this is not healthy dieting; these actors employ fast and unsafe measures to achieve temporary results rapidly.
