Drugs and alcohol

Drugs and alcohol are a huge problem in our society. Violent crimes and other not so violent crimes are committed every day for the purpose of buying drugs. Often it's the small time drug dealer who does the time  in prison whilst Mr. Big sits in his protected fortress counting his dollars.

A lot of money has been spent by the government on harm minimisation in order to deal with the spread of diseases, but people are still waiting up to two weeks to get a spot in a detox clinic.Sometimes within that two weeks waiting period they will overdose and die and sometimes they will just not have the tenacity to keep hoping for a spot and so they commit further crimes and use drugs again.

Currently the government is spending more money on building more prisons but the people who will end up there will walk out the gates still addicted because they haven't addressed their drug problem which led them to commit a crime in the first place! There may be opportunity for group in prison, but the environment in prison is not one which allows people to share their deep, dark secrets because otherwise they may just become someone's brew bitch, or worse!

The government needs to spend more money on rehabilitation, not punishment. Then, I think our communities would be safer. Then we could eradicate homelessness and then we may be also able to tackle this huge problem of drugs, alcohol and crime.
