For the last 6 months i have been thinking of getting lap banding done as my aunty who i have talked with about it has got it done about 18 months ago.
Im only 19, weight 175kg last time i was weighed by my doctor and Im around 158cm tall (kind of short). For me i find it scary as Im really still a teenager. I don't have any memories of myself being skinny but only have pictures when i was a small child. All my life been battling the weight with shake diets to herbal remedies but only attending TAFE i cant afford $100 tablets to suppress the appetite from GP. Does anyone know if its the right option for someone my age? Im not sure what to do as i wouldn't be able to afford it privately.

Well do what I did I took out private health insurance which you need to do for 12 months before you can have it done under your health cover. I pd about $50 a month which gave me 12 months to decide if it was what I really wanted. After having the op I was still out of pocket about $3000 but 12 months on I am loving the band. I am 20 years oldr than you I was 153kg and 164cm tall. I have lost 50kgs so far and think the band is the best thing since sliced bread. Yes its a life change and you have to want to do it. The band is a tool and wont do it on its own. I have played up and been very naughty at times with food and alcohol choices and have not put weight back on but havent lost either. It is a big decision that only you can make. Good luck Im sure you will make the right decisin for you.. It might be no I dont want it but then its your decison and yours alone. Dont let anyone force you. But I would reccommend it to anyone.. GOOD LUCK

Hi I dont know where you are but you could go on the government funded wait list, ask your GP about it. I am in Tasmania and the wait is not too bad. Having lapband surgery is a  pretty radical way to lose weight, but if it is the last resort, it may be the only way, as I have found myself. I started at 105 kgs and I am only 5ft, I have health issues, so it is important for me to get the weight off. Its NOT aquick fix like some say or the easy way out. Its damb hard work, and it takes a LOT of self control and will poswer to stay focused. I should have my band done in Jan, I'm hoping all my hard work exercising and eating vegeies has paid off, and I keep losing. 19 is not too young. I went to a seminar with a surgeon here and he said he had done young kids with obesity problems. It could save your life, a life too young to lose to the battle of obesity. I hope for your sake you can get onto the public funded one. Keep us up to date with what happens.
All the best.

Lucky,

If you are seriously considering Lap Banding then I suggest you talk to your GP and get a referral to a Lap Banding doc. Your GP shouldn't have a problem with that considering your current weight and your history of dieting.

Have a good long chat with the surgeon and banding team and make sure it is the right decision for you. You can ask them any question and usually they are happy to answer them.

If you decide banding is the option you wish to proceed with and can't afford to go privately then look at getting onto a public list (if your state has them) at a large public hospital.

Best of luck with it!

its a real personal choice but as Pryetta said get a referral and have a chat to a surgeon and do lots of research about it, read about the good, the bad and the ugly about lapbanding.  If it saves your life then it is worth every cent.  I accessed my super but then I am a tad bit older than you too and my choice was not to wait the 12 months as I had heath issues too.  Good luck to you and I hope you get the help you need.

thanks everyone i am going to see my doctor on friday.. im in north brisbane and for the last couple of years i have been offered the lap band surgery but have not gone for it as my mum believes that trying it yourself is better. Now that im old enough to make more life changing decision i feel that this will be for the better. Im sick of sleeping most of the day and waking up eating and finding that im tired 3 hours later. Will let you know what happens and hopefully with an around about BMI of 60 - 72 i think it might come faster than i think (well i hope anyway). Ive done the optislim diet before and lasted a month so i guess that i can do it again as people have said that you do this before surgery. Will get back to you in the new year. Thanks so much for your input!

There is a thread here on lapbanding books. Try to get some of them out of the library.

To lucky charm.

Hi I am Westy and I to live North of Brisbane  I am 155 height and weighed in at 105 Kgs.  I had been researching Lap Band Surgery for about 2 years  I took the plunge and had Surgery 27th October.

I firsly went to my GP to find out about the Public Surgery for Lap Band and she did a referral to RBH, but unfortunaltely the list is very long (8years), but some GP's know their way around the System.

I was banded by Dr Greenslades at Green@%&#s Private, but I took out cover with MBF.  He was the cheapest Surgeon I could find, but really like him.  He used to do Lap Band  Surgery at QE11 hospital, Publicly - but u would have to ring his office.

I paid
$3300 Dr Greenslade (Including first Appointment) - I received about $700.00 back thru fund and Medicare
$400.00 Gas Man  - No rebate as already Medicare and Health payment has been taken out

The trouble is that you have to pay upfront and then u can claim your rebates.

There are some Surgeons (reading on this board) who can do it publicly, but was not able to find any in Brisy area.

Good luck -

Westy

Thanks Westy I saw Dr Greenslade's website and was glad to see someone puts their prices on the web. I am ringing around tomorrow to some other specialists in brisbane (stupid public holiday) as I'm trying to see if anyone will go under the medical gap scheme but i highly doubt it will happen. Had to look for a specialist myself as i went to the doctor but she was like ok find a surgeon and come back to me  and from what my aunt was saying who had it done 18 months ago is that her doctor helped her. From this and the way my doctor was i don't think i will be going to her from now on.... i shouldn't have to do the doctors work. Thanks for letting me know about the public waiting list honestly i thought it would be a categorized waiting list but from what i've gathered its a first in first served.... but 8 years is a lot longer than i thought

Hi i am on the 2 weeks prep before the my op, I live in Perth and the public system here there is a 3 year weight to have it done.

I opted for Optislim the shake tastes better and it was also $10 cheaper.
There is a hospital here in which a doctor preforms the banding to public patients in his private practice and it costs $1000, which there is not medicare refund but it is done in around 4 months.

The inital consult is $170 wich you get mosy back from meducare then the consults after wards are $160 with again most of it  back.
You get the dieticians visit x 2 and the op,.
Of course the other extras you have to buy like the sustagen, multivitamins.

I am 5 feet 2 inches or round 155 cm and i weighed in at 130 kilos, I have high BP, cholesterol, problems with budging discs in my back and joint pain, also i have just been told i am insulin resistant.
I have had 2 pulmonary embolisms and a clot in my leg and am permanently on warfarin.
My Doctor has told me I couldn't wait the 3 years for the op so i saved my tax money and its paid for now and on the 13th of jan it being done.
I am nervous but am hoping it will improve my health problems and give me back some energy and a better life with more activity.
Life is too short and precious to waste being overweight an just watching everyone else have fun.
Good luck to all who go fot it and well done at reclaiming your life back.

Hi Lucky Charm

Yes you are doing the right thing by ringing around Surgeons.  You will be very surprised at the price difference from Surgeon to Surgeon.

I did this exercise myself and could not find anyone cheaprer than Dr Greenslade - but do not know the price if you are without  Private Cover.

Let us know how you get on.

All the Best

Wait lists are NOT dependant on state. They depend on the individual doctor and the bed availability at that particular hospital he works at. If he works from two hospitals, they sometimes have two lists. Theres no one list for Melbourne, or VIC or NSW for example. The general waiting list they talk about on TV is just an average, usually of only the major hospitals.
The "waiting list" in melbourne when I was done for example, was 3 years. But I found a surgeon with a short waiting list at a hospital with plenty of availability and was done in 11 months. Shop around and ask the secretaries what the waiting times are, you will find they vary.
(You also dont have to have the surgery in your state).

Find a surgeon and talk to them first about going public before saying youre willing to paying for it - to be honest, with your BMI, Id be very suprised if the surgeon didnt put you on the list as urgent and have you done within a few months.... and it would be free that way.
Take every medical record that could be in any way remotely related to your weight to the surgeon with you.

Hi there
I had lap band surgery through Dr Dolan in Joondalup on 24 November 2010. I went under as a public patient and it only took three months (from memory) to get my surgery done.
I would totally recommend it!
The only out of pocket expense i have had is the $1000 i had to pay before my surgery and a couple of dollars here and then after my consult appointments as Queeniepeanut has already said!
Good luck with your decisions everyone!

Hi out there, after many years of yo-yo, dieting I have decided that I would like to have Lap Band surgery, Only problem is what hospitals in Melbourne have a waiting list..I ask my doctor and and he wanted me to go to someone who is private, and discuss with him my situation, how that being a single mum and struggle I can't afford ,t and want it for FREE.. I would prefer to talk to someone who understands my circumstances, LIKE A PUBLIC HOSPITAL IN MELBOURNE WHO HAVE WAITING LISTS. What Public hospitals have a waiting list hope someone can give me a few as I have phoned same with no luck..

Hi all, I'm an 18 year old girl from Melbourne. I had the lap banding surgery in November 2008 (when I was 16) - along with my mother - after trying all the different techniques to losing weight. I was 165cm tall and weighed about 130kg. I recently (start of April this year) had to have my band redone as it had moved and a pouch had formed. But I don't hate the blame nor blame the surgeon nor surgery for this. Before I had my lap banding redone I was down to about 69kg, the first time under 70kg in about 9 years. Since having all my fluid removed before the surgery was redone and to now (about a month and a half) I have put on almost 12 kgs. And I know I couldn't do it without the surgery, and I am very grateful to my mother and grandmother for supporting me with the decision, pretty much everyone else I was close to was against it. My doctor was a Mr. Jason Winnett and he is and has been brilliant for the entire time of my care so far. And has been a support in himself, my most recent lap banding procedure (the redo) had some minor complications and he continually came in to check on myself when I was in hospital, and made sure to explain everything that happened inside theatre to both myself and my parents including that it was his fault (he thought he may have perforated my stomach - turns out I was lucky :D). Currently myself, my mother, my father (they are divorced) and my aunty have all had lap banding done my Mr. Winnett and another of my Aunties is looking at having it done by him. My advice to anyone that is considering having the surgery is to do some research, find a doctor you are comfortable with, dont listen to people who say 'lap banding is the cheaters way' (I have heard this many times) - it's still hard work, the lap band is just an aid. And find people around you who will support you. Good luck to all of you considering the surgery, and those of you going ahead with it. If you need any help, or questions answered just ask me :D Good luck

I would like any one considering bariatric surgery to make sure this is what you want and that you have considered all the outcomes. I had mine (banding ) in 2005 laproscopically I was 219.5 lbs and 5ft tall. During that time I had 2 fills of saline totaling 2.5cc. In 2010, I was hospitalized at 84 lbs with a hernia and three organs shutting down and enough bile and acid to fill a semi-truck. I was dying ( was told if 1-2 hours waited I would have passed away). When these problems had arisen I was treated as if was seeking help (ER) because I was an addict because of my size. Which was actually due to the lap-band. My band had slipped upward onto my esophagus and tore the hernia. The solution was not to remove the band but remove the saline. So therefore, I still have the band, have problems daily and have gained my weight back because once your body has as the doctors describe it "starved for 5 years" it will hold onto everything you put in it. I am just now stopping the weight gain, But this doesn't change the fact that there is no after care, no counseling, no help in managing your lap-band the right way. Or proper notification of the potential real dangers even years after this surgery so be sure. I did all the research on all procedures and chose this banding as it was the safest option. I believe now the only safest option is to lose weight naturally over time.
