OK guys I'm about to start the 2 week Optifast before the surgery... Couple of questions are they much the same or is one nicer than the other?  And also I have been reading a lot of comments of how much people have lost on this phase but I thought the whole idea of this diet was to reduce the size of the liver for the actually surgery - is that right?

yes.....the whole idea is so liver size is reduced and there are no problems incurred e.g. damaging organs, during surgery.

I noticed your heading. Depending on your surgeon, some won't allow you to interchange optifast for optislim. However, my dietican said it was ok as they are similar. Just beware of kj. E.g. the optifast chocolate bar is better than optislim as less kj.

Do not use tony ferguson as these are specifically meant for only a 2 meal replacement plan. Too many carbs and sugars.

Good luck with the optifast stage. It's the easy part.

    Gidget,

I have to say that Optifast kept me feeling fuller for longer than Optislim.

Also like Rob has stated, some surgeons want you to stick with just Optifast and not use any other brand of shakes. They all have their different reasons for this so if you are thinking of using something else, ask one of your surgeon's team first.

As for loosing weight, we can't determine where to shed the fat from so while you are losing weight with the Optifast you can guarantee it is also coming off the liver and other internal organs.

    Best of luck with it.

Gidget - My Optifast was a packaged deal from my Surgeon.  I have already been on this before.  Its not to bad vanilla and the soups are a bit yucky, but all in all it is okay

It is benefical for Surgery as they have to lift the liver, and surgeons like little livers, that are nice and healthy.  I only have to do Opti for 10 days.

You will be fine, first couple of days is the hardest.

I have been on the optifast for 4 weeks, it does get a little boring trying to find new ways to eat veges. But its worth it as I have lost 10 kg so far. I have 2 weeks to go ( hopefully) before my band is done. My doc said i had to do it to shrink the liver. Optifast is more expensive but it is designed to do what the doctors want and thats to shrink the liver. I hated the soups, but love the coffee and strawberry shakes. the chocolate dessert is nice but its so rich I can only eat half of one pkt.

Thanks for the info guys - its day two for me and I have to say I do prefer Optifast to Optislim for the taste factor.  I was feeling empty last night and so I re-read my notes from the dietician and they said I could have de-caf coffee! No sugar and little milk...... -thank god for that!!  I'm keeping a diary too just so I can look back at the journey etc.  My dietician said I can use both o/fast & o/slim so I have mixed it up a bit, I have to agree with Pyretta o/fast does fill you up a bit more.  Its good to be able to come here to this forum and have a look at what other people are going through and have been through... good luck to you all :-)

    L<eanne,

One of my favourite things on Optifast was making the vanilla shakes with a touch of cinnamon.

Hi everyone I am new to this forum but have been reading a few others. I am on Optifast for 3 weeks & not finding it too hard. I have tried some of the Opti slim and agree with the other posts that I feel fuller on optifast. My banding is set for 7th April with Gall Bladder removal as well. At least I will get rid of some impressive stones and pain too. Anyone else had this too? So far I've lost 8kgs. Anyone had their surgery at The Avenue in Melb. with Prof Peter Nottle? How did your hospital stay turn out? Nadine.

I have been over weight for most of my adult life.
I tried both optislim and optifast once, but for only a few weeks.
For the first time ever!! i lost a small 9 kilos in 3 months. It was mainly due to the first 2 weeks on optislim.

I had to stop using these products as they are not affordable.

I am double the weight I should be and am very upset that I cant purchase optifast. As this was the only thing that could help in all the years ive tried to get rid off the weight.Including walking, diet programs,as seen on tv,and pills, which only made me gain a couple of kilos.
Now I am also older im putting on more each year.
Has anyone got any idea how to get this cheaper?

I have been an OptiFast user for a few years and love the strawberry shake and berry crunch bars - they atually taste pretty good.  Yesterday, I gave into the temptation of lower price and bought two big packs of the OptiSlim strawberry shakes. BAD MOVE - it tastes awful and looks and smells like the artificial, powdery, chemical rubbish that it is.

However, I also bought a single sachet of the OptiSlim Life banana shake - and it was much better.

Before my lap band surgery, I used OptiFast to crash diet and it worked so well for two weeks that the doctor actually advised me not to have the surgery.   I also then used it as twice a day for a few months, with a normal meal in between and minor exercise, and I managed to maintain my weight pretty well.

(Does anyone know why the OptiFast strawberry shakes do not come in the box of 40 like the chocolate, or why the smaller packs have 8, instead of ten?)

Im planing to go on either optifast or optislim shakes Im not sure which ones are better.
Im just thinking maybe a mix of the two wouldn't hurt?

Hi everyone I have tried both and found it really difficult to stick to either. I have found a better alternative and it does have the same effect in that it puts your body into ketogenesis where your body uses fat as an energy source. You would have to check with your surgeon if this was suitable but I actually went from 88kg to 73kg in 5 weeks using Body Trim. The best part was that there was no meal replacement shakes or pills used at all. and you get to eat real food. It was really awesome and after the first 3 days didnt feel like a diet at all. Cheers

I have been on the Optifast for the past 4 days and even though it has been a struggle, I feel less bloated already and THIS TIME I am going to make a go of it!

The strawberry Optifast shake is my fave...next the chocolate but I would rather die than try that vanilla again...it was damn awful.

Cross fingers that in 3 months time I have lost at least 20kgs....is it possible do you think?

Paul, try adding a teaspoon or two of instant coffee to the vanilla shake. I sometimes order a shot of coffee from a lunch shop and add that if I am working on the road. I am 10 days in and lost 8kgs.

I am aged 77 and like other oldies find weight loss hard. My doctor friend suggested Optifast, bur starting with one meal a day or two when it suited.  I found it so easy to do. I lost my weight in 12 weeks, followed by stabilisation for 12 weeks, and use an occasional packet for travelling or quick and easy.  It is not expensive - normal healthy food costs the same as it, especially if you buy the big packs. To get enough protein from meat is expensive and fat becomes a problem. No one can go back to refined unhealthy food without gaining weight.

I started optifast 3 days ago and iv already lost 2-3 kilo ( i forgot to weigh myself first day) its so much easier than lemon detox diet .. who ever said its expensive is tripping coz its so much cheaper than buying food for a week .. around $50 for 7 days worth of shakes so unless ur living on 2 min noodles it works out to be very cheap...

I have to agree with Alana.... I bought a box of optifast shakes for under $50.  That is less than $2.30 per shake/meal.
    Super cheap!

I've only tried the chocolate shakes so far.  I was curious to find out if Optislim is as good and googled "optifast vs optislim".... and here I am.  I think I'll stick with Optifast after what others have said about the taste and how much it fills you up.

Thanks everyone for posting your thoughts. :-)
