No problem whatsoever. What type of trouble were you thinking...?

I was banded 2 years ago on the public list. It took 11 months from my first consultation with my surgeon. Then I had it done. all good.

Thousands of people have it done on the public list every year.

Theres nothing you have to fill out or do, and nothing you need to pay for, except maybe the gap with fills after surgery. But that depends on how much your surgeon charges for them.

    Michelle,

What problems do you foresee being banded on the public list. I was banded publicly in Melbourne back in 2007 but most of my aftercare has been through a private clinic.

If I can help with anything just ask.

I live in Rural WA about 2 hours south of Perth. I am wondering what, if any, public hospitals and or doctors do lap banding and what the wait time is to get it done. How much do you have to pay out of pocket as well.

Hi Kristi, I am also in rural WA, east of Perth.  I was banded early in December at Joondalup by Dr Dolan.  The wait was only a few months and I was a public patient and only paid $1000.
    Good luck.

I wondered if anyone from Tasmania has been done in launceston. I also wondered if they had to pay for anything or if they had any complications with thier surgery?

    Michelle,

Unfortunately I don't know if there is anyone from tassie currently on the list. I do remember there were a couple of people that were banded in Launceston and they were quite successful.

I'm pretty sure the public list in Tassie is completely free though I don't know if the follow-up is.

    David,

To the best of my knowledge there is no government funded banding being done in Sydney, or anywhere in NSW.

I really don't know what your options are, other than taking out health insurance or aproaching a public hosptial to see what they can offer in the way of assistance. Most hopsitals have obesity clinics.

I know what it's like to be that size and desperate for help. Please try and seek assistance where you can.

    DAVID,

Im from NSW, there is no government funding for lapbands in NSW. So fly to another state and have it done like I did. I got it done free in Melbourne.

    Michelle,

Free public list, means FREE public list ;) you dont have to pay for anything when you have the surgery done, except for any medication scripts you take home with you, so get supplies while in hospital.

Some surgeons will make you pay for fills (you get some back from medicare) and some will bulk bill. Ask your surgeon if he charges for fills, because you will need these, many at first, then one every few months for the rest of your life. If your surgeon does charge, you can get another surgeon who bulk bills to do them.

Complications - lap banding has the highest rate of complications, it makes absolutely no difference if you go public or private (for ANY operation).
The difference with lap band complications is they USUALLY arent life threatening. with the other surgeries, while complications are less, they are usually a little more serious.

I had my port flip and needed it fixed in surgery, and now i think i have a pouch or a band slip, which ill deal with. A lot of people have a complication at some point in their banded life.

I was banded last year at the RHH I have never heard of any bands done at LGH I had no infections the cost was nil I do pay $10 a fill through Dr wilkinson. I waited 4 years or more to get my band on the free list  but they did tell me when mine was done I was the first to be done with their new team. This was later told to me again by the anethatist as he ran tape measures over me to get better equipment for larger frames like mine. My name came up 1 month befor my private health kicked in as I had given up on getting one done at the royal at the time they were doing less than 15 a year. I got kind of mad with them as every time I rang they told me it would be done in less than 3 months so beware it may take some time.
Luckily I did get in for free as I had a mild angina attack so ended up staying in hospital for 5 days which my private health would not of covered.
    goodluck

    To David
I have just moved out of NSW but was put on the public waiting list for gastric banding. They only do 20 operations a year and i had to attend a clinic at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Metabolic Clinic. As i have moved out of state i could not continue the clinic but was told in anycase the wait for surgery is years. I was advised that my best and quickest option was to go privately

Hi, I was privately lap banded 4 years ago with no private health insurance, so it was quite expensive. Now I have a slippage of the band that makes me vomit every second day, has been going on for 8 months. They have decided i need surgery to fix the problem, but its going to cost $11 000. Does anyone know if public hospitals fix bands that have been done privately? We don't have that sort of money and I'm sick of being sick!
