1. Preheat the oven to 190Â°C.
2. Stand the pears upright in a baking dish just large enough to hold them. Drizzle the maple syrup over the pears and sprinkle them with the sugar. Add the ginger slices and star anise to the dish.
3. Cover the dish with foil, being careful not to knock the pears over, and bake for 50 minutes, until tender. 4. Discard the star anise and ginger. Serve the pears drizzled with the syrup.
