Issue 34: How to make the fairy on top of the Fairy Toadstool Cake!

Ingredients

300g white fondant
Skin/flesh colour gel food colouring
Brown gel food colouring
Pink gel food colouring
1 x 22 gauge food-safe cake wire (from cake decorating stores)
2 mini chocolate bits

Method

To make Fairy:

1. Knead white fondant on a clean surface dusted with icing sugar, until smooth. Tint 120g fondant skin colour, kneading until smooth. Roll 60g into a body with a tapered end. Roll 20g into a ball for the `head’ and place on top. Roll remaining into arms and legs. Stick legs under body. Make feet.

2. Tint 50g fondant pink and 30g brown. Roll out pink until 1.5mm thick. Cut out a piece to fit around fairy to form her dress. Frill edges along the bottom of dress. Make two arm holes with a skewer. Wrap dress around body and stick on. Stick arms into arm holes. Make hands and fingers using the tip of a knife.

3. Roll out brown fondant to 1.5mm thick. Cut out a 1.5cm wide x 4cm long strip for hair. Turn the ends around a skewer to curl. Mark lines in hair with back of a knife. Stick on head.

4.Roll out remaining white fondant. Cut a small `tiara-shape’ with a zig zag pattern in a top. Cut a small star and flower for dress. Cut wire to size and thread star on it. Insert wand under hand. Stick flower onto dress. Insert chocolate bits for eyes and mark a mouth. Prop `fairy’ up against a straight-sided object and allow to dry.
