Fortune cookies originated in China

Fortune cookies, those crisp, hollow biscuits holding a slip of paper printed with a premonition that you get at Chinese restaurants, must have come from China, right? Turns out this one's false. The story goes that these little gimmicks were devised in California and based on a Japanese cracker.
