The popularity of androgyny in the modeling world is now spilling out into advertising. An advertisement for Toyota’s new car, the Auris, features androgynous model Stav Strashko.
The advertisement opens with a close up of Strashko in bright red underwear, a black raincoat and high heels walking towards a car. The shot begins from behind, cuts in front to reveal the model with long blonde hair and then back again.
From behind, Strashko’s features and frame look exactly like a woman’s, but when he reaches the Toyota he spins around and looks into the camera in a full frame shot, revealing the truth.
At the end of the commercial the tagline flashes in Japanese saying “Not in trend, not casual, not for everyone.”
Watch the video:Strashko seems to be the newest androgynous model to gain a lot of attention in the modeling world. Andrej Pejic, a Serbian-born Australian model, began gaining popularity in 2010 for his own androgynous looks and is now Jean Paul Gaultier’s muse. Pejic was also confused for a woman regularly. He appeared on the cover of Dossier Journal, though the image was deemed too inappropriate and was poly-bagged at major stores.

Strashko was born in the Ukraine and grew up in Tel Aviv. He started modeling in 2010 and has several fan sites dedicated to him. He recently posted the clip of the commercial on his Facebook page saying “Omg Its finally out my ass and face on toyota’s new auris commercial!!!! :))))))”

All the stylists put women’s clothes on me and then it struck me that I can really look like a woman…I remember myself as a child playing with my mom’s makeup a few times when she wasn’t looking.”
The commercial is an interesting twist on the usual car commercials featuring blonde models with large breasts in barely there bikinis. The commercial is only being aired in Japan right now but has already gone viral on the Internet.
