Fashion Fix: Embrace Monroe's Old Hollywood Glamour
Posted by Alyssa Salvo for Fashion - Mon, 20 Jun 2011 23:10
Over the weekend the iconic ivory pleated dress worn by Marilyn Monroe
in the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch sold for a whopping $US4.6 million
($AU4.3m).
The classic-cut flowing halter dress was made famous by the scene where Monroe's character stands over a subway vent as a rush of air lifts her skirt whilst she playfully attempts to remain covered.
Monroe's dress was considered to be the most prized possession in actress Debbie Reynold's fifty-year-old Hollywood memorabilia collection that went to auction in Los Angeles last Saturday night.
The 3500-piece collection included many famous fashion items previously worn by other Hollywood icons such as Grace Kelly, Natalie Wood, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Marlon Brando, Julie Andrews and Madonna.
When I heard about this unbelievable historic fashion moment it had me thinking about the essence of Monroe's romantic old Hollywood style. Her feminine glamorous look with that hint of sexy edge. To me it's the epitome of pure perfection.
This classic style is a major trend right now with many of our favourite
actresses keeping the Monroe tradition alive.
Here, Eva Longoria does a modern take on the romantic pleat dress, wearing a Georges Hobeika Couture
2011 spring design at the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild
Awards.
Kirsten Dunst appeared at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival in this mustard yellow mid-length pleated dress from the Chloe 2011 spring collection. Dolled up to the nines in true old Hollywood style, Dunst accompanies the classic feminine look with bright red lips.
