What i think would work for Fassbender is that he is new so not seen too many times like maybe Dicaprio is. He was the best thing about Prometheus (which i disliked otherwise). He had great presence in Inglorious bastards and was sensational in Xmen First Class. As a negative he was recently in a film about Freud and Jung. I never saw the movie but would guess it was heavily concerned with sex. The last thing he wants is to be typecast as the guy who appears in otherwise boring sexfest. I think that could kill his career.
