We caught up with Mick after the show and asked him a few more questions, and found out who he would invite to a dinner party.

Michael ‘Mick’ Malthouse is one of Australia’s most well-known AFL player and coach. Finishing up his on-field career in 1982 due to injury, Mick couldn’t leave the sport he loved so much stepping into a coaching role in 1984. After a 28 year career, Mick retired and took the opportunity to spend more time with his family. A proud husband, father and now grandfather to Zac, Holly and Lillia, he is dedicated to saving the environment and enjoying life’s little pleasures.

What’s the best thing about downsizing to an apartment?

When you are a busy persona and you no longer have your kids at home and you no longer have time for other things such as gardening It was time to downsize. I loved my garden but it was very time consuming. The apartment is next to the Fitzroy Park and next to botanical gardens, it’s a 10 minute walk to federation square so the location is perfect.

What room in the house is your favourite and why?
The bat cave – that’s where I get tossed out if my wife is watching TV upstairs. It’s the back room and that’s where I chill out, watch a video or sport event, read and just relax. What’s the best thing about your home?

It’s family and grandchildren friendly.

You are known for your football, what is something people don’t know about you?
A crusader for the environment. I helped increase people’s awareness of the protection of old growth forests. I’m no master of these but I really enjoy science and history and love English soccer and world rugby. You transitioned from playing to coaching to commentary, what was it like?
I now know what it means not to have a passion for a win or a loss. The whole game is built on winning and losing and to step away from that was nice. Now that you have retired what do you plan on doing with your time?
I actually have a very busy work schedule due to lots of commitments so some days I work long hours. But, when I do have time off I like to get on my bike and ride around Melbourne and I also love to spend time with my grandchildren. If you had a dinner party, who would you invite?

Leader ship qualities John F Kennedy, Neilson Mandela, Winston Churchill, Gengis Kahn, Marco Polo and Neil Armstrong.
