Oil finishes can be applied to bare timber or over a clear coating. Scandinavian oil finish is used over a clear coating such as polyurethane or shellac. It gives a smooth lustre.

Gather your supplies

  • Claw hammer and nail punch
  • Pliers
  • Upright power sander (can be hired)
  • Hand sander
  • Cork sanding block
  • Abrasive paper
  • Dusting brush
  • Filling blades
  • Putty knife
  • Wood filler
  • Protective glasses and dust mask
  • Scandinavian oil
  • Notes:

The cloths used for oil rubbing must be disposed of in a container of water or laid out to dry before being stored. Otherwise it is possible they will catch fire through spontaneous combustion.

    Here's How

    • Step 1: Prepare the timber floor and stain it if required. Allow it to dry thoroughly.
    • Step 2: Apply two coats of polyurethane matt finish, allowing approximately 12 hours between coats. Wait another 48 hours before proceeding.
    • Step 3: Sand the clear coating with abrasive paper or steel wool, using the oil as a lubricant. Wipe excess oil from the surface.
    • Step 4: Use a clean, soft cloth to apply one coat of oil, rubbing with the timber grain until the desired finish is achieved. Wipe away excess oil (excess oil will dry slowly and cause a patchy, uneven sheen).
