City-slick style, this new kitchen is a far cry from the dark and dated room it once was.
With storage to die for, a warm mix of textures and tones, and the latest in high-tech appliances, this kitchen ticks all the boxes. Owners Rebecca and Shane overhauled the original kitchen as part of a major renovation to the whole apartment, gutting the interior to create a more open layout.Their brief to designer Corrina Andersen-Allsopp of Creative Space Interiors was for a kitchen that opened up to the living areas and captured the pretty water views, but also one that could cope with Rebecca’s serious love of cooking. “We wanted a free-flowing space,
but also a nice, big area,” says Rebecca.Perfect plan
The galley-style layout offers an abundance of workspace in fresh-look CaesarStone in Snow. A freestanding benchtop includes a casual dining spot at the end, complete with ‘Loop’ bar stools from Lounge Designer Furniture, which makes it a handy spot for friends to perch with a drink while chatting to the cook. But the best part, according to Rebecca, is that it can now cope with more than one cook at a time. “A lot of galley kitchens are narrow, but this one’s really wide, so you can have someone doing their thing on the bench behind you,” she says.
The kitchen connects easily with the adjoining living area, but still has a defined space of its own, thanks to the two structural pillars that sit at either end of the bench. “I love being able to cook while my partner is watching TV, and just look out at the view,” says Rebecca.
Rebecca wanted a contemporary look, but with a hint of warmth. “The colours we wanted were modern, but quite masculine,” she says. That’s all here: the honey-toned timber veneer on the cabinetry – New Age Veneers’ Enviroven 2 ‘Ashen Fineline’ – provides the warmth, while the chic white CaesarStone benchtop adds a touch of contemporary cool. A mirrored glass splashback reflects natural light and views back into the room and brings a modern edge, while the 600mm x 600mm ‘Argento Chiaro’ honed marble floor tiles, from Skheme, provide smoky depth.
An enormous, custom-made pendant light shade hanging over the benchtop gives the kitchen a sense of sophistication and at night defines the zone as an intimate dining area.A great entertainer
Along with good looks, the kitchen had to offer high performance, so good storage and top-quality appliances were a must. “I absolutely love cooking,” says Rebecca, “and we do a lot of entertaining.” She ensured that there was no shortage of storage, with banks of overhead cupboards and deep, wide drawers running the length of the kitchen. The fridge and pantry are tucked behind cabinetry doors, which adds to the streamlined style of the room. “If we did it over again, the only thing I’d change is to go for an even bigger pantry,” she says.Science of appliances
The couple chose the latest mix of Miele appliances, including an extra-wide oven, a steamer oven, built-in coffee machine and induction cooktop. “We wanted good-quality appliances, and needed to keep re-sale in mind, too,” Rebecca says.
So far, the new-and-improved kitchen has more than met expectations. Rebecca relishes the user-friendly layout. “It’s such a nice space to be in,” she says. “And, sure enough, when we have people over, everyone spends the whole time standing in the kitchen!”
