Australia’s favourite vet, Dr Harry, shares his expert advice on caring for your pets.
If there is one downside to summer it's the nasty insects and bugs that bite us and our pets. Some can be a major problem for our pets so here is Dr Harry's top tips on how to deal with them.
Bringing a new dog or cat into a home where a dog or cat already lives can cause problems. Here are a few tips to help prevent trouble. Firstly, dog to dog. Try to introduce the new dog as a puppy, that way it will be subservient to your first dog. Have them meet on neutral ground, or through a gate, where they can have a good sniff of each other. Introducing a new cat to your dog can be a challenge. The cat will need a room of its own in which to retreat if threatened. Let the dog get used to the cat’s scent before they meet, and make sure the dog can’t enter the cat’s room. Cats feel secure when up high, so always provide a tall cat tower. Gradual introductions are the way to go. It can take anywhere from six minutes to six months for your pets to get along.

Reflective dog vests are available, as are reflective or illuminated collars and leads – or you can purchase a red flashing beacon that slips on the dog’s collar. For extra safety, avoid walking on the road, and always keep your dog on a lead.
ID for petsPermanent identification of your cat or dog is essential. Discs can be easily removed from dog collars, and cat collars are designed to slip off to prevent choking. Microchipping is the only sure way of permanently identifying your pet, be it a dog, cat or bird! The chip is a little over 1mm in diameter and about 5mm long. Each chip has a number and bar code, and can be scanned just like a supermarket item. The chip contains both pet and owner details, which are logged onto a database, so you can be easily reunited with your furry friend if they get lost. ReplyMy German Shepherd is scared of everything! He has never been hurt or abused, in fact he has been loved and spoilt...but when we go to the dog park he lays down submissively as soon as anything bigger than a chihuaha comes near him. Denver is 8 months old and now that he is a big boy the situation is a tad embarassing.Did he miss out on the courage-gene?
ReplyAny advice would be awesome...have a 2 yr old male cat, not desexed yet but will be shortly. We just moved house and we have a cat door so he can get in and out to go to toilet. Issue is, since we have moved in a neigbhourhood cat has decided our house is his and comes into my home, into my bedroom and attacks my cat. It has sprayed all over my back deck now too. I know it isnt my cat as I have to lock him in now. My cat is spraying all through the house, wont use his litter tray and is very skitish now. How can I get rid of this other cat so that my cat can live a normal life and us too.
ReplyHi there we have a Labrador retriever who loves water, problem is she is starting to smell and people are starting to comment on it. We know it is bacteria and heard that the only way to solve this s to blow dry them. This is impracticle as especially when we go camping she is in and out of the water all the time, she also loves swimming in the pool. Can anyone help as hate seeing people saying things like, oh you stink when she is just a lovable dog who loves water.
ReplyI have a toy poodle who is constantly licking at our feet when we walk and when she sees someone new. She eventually stops but we would like to have her not attack people with her tongue!
