Adopting a pet can be a very rewardin and happy experience for you and the whole family. Here are Dr Harry's top tips for adopting a new pet.

A second chance is a wonderful thing, and so many animals out there need another opportunity to live a rewarding and happy life. At animal shelters right around Australia, there are literally thousands of dogs, cats, kittens and puppies pleading for you to give them a loving home.

Many people believe most animals are surrendered because of problems with their behaviour. While that is true in some cases, the vast majority are simply taken in because people’s circumstances change and they can no longer look after their pet.

The first decision to make when you visit a shelter is how old you would like your new pet to be. A puppy or kitten may appeal as you have the advantage of being able to train them to do things your way. On the other hand, an older pet has outgrown any naughty teenage and adolescent behaviour and may therefore make a better choice.

The temperament of your new pet is perhaps the most important factor of all, but also consider the following:
- Is the size of the pet suited to your yard and budget?
- Do you have time for the amount of exercise they need?
- Dogs can be very clingy. Can you give them plenty of attention and stimulation?
- Different pets need different levels of grooming. Do you have the time and/or money to stay on top of it?
- Do you have another pet and will they get along?

- Are you prepared for all the responsibilities involved in the owning of a pet and is your yard secure?

It’s important to ensure you adopt the right pet for you. Your new furry friend needs to fit in with your family’s personality and lifestyle, particularly if it’s a dog! Staff at the Animal Welfare League employ the best methods in order to match pets with new owners. For dogs, there are periods where their behaviour, interactions with people and other dogs, and temperament are observed. They are also desexed, vaccinated and health checked. You will get expert advice and time at home to assess how well things are going, as well as ongoing support. For more details, visit www.animalwelfare.com.au
