How to train a puppy to go to the toilet in the right spot takes time and patience, but the lasting benefits are worth it!

When you get a new puppy, you should start toilet training as soon as they come home. They will want to eliminate soon after eating, drinking or waking. When you see signs such as sniffing the floor and turning in circles, get them outside onto the lawn and use a set phrase – I simply say ‘wee wee’. When it happens, praise them verbally and give them a cuddle. Ignore mistakes indoors and only reprimand when you catch them in the act. Kittens, purchased at 12 weeks, are much easier as they have already been toilet trained by their mother. Initially, use the same litter as the breeder, and make any changes gradually. Keep the tray in a quiet place and sieve daily or clean at least every second day using a mixture of one part vinegar to three parts water.
