Dr Harry shares his expert advice on how to care for your dog through every stage of it's life.
The average life expectancy of dogs is about 15 years, so buying a puppy is indeed a long-term commitment. Just like us, they go through stages in their lives. Puppy-hood, like childhood, then adolescence, adulthood and finally old age. Each stage requires adaptation in diet, socialisation, training and physical exercise.
Adolescence sees the onset of hormonal change and behaviour like chewing everything in sight, ‘renovating’ the garden and testing boundaries. This is the time for desexing, obedience training and rule enforcement.
Adulthood kicks in around the time most dogs reach two-and-a-half years of age. They need regular exercise, grooming, continued training and, for energetic breeds, a diversion, such as agility training or flyball games. It’s also time to adjust the diet to one designed for an adult.
Old age is perhaps the most endearing time> At this life stage, your dog needs more companionship, many hours sleeping, graded exercise and above all, comfort. Ensure they maintain good health with regular vet check-ups. Diet is important and avoiding excess weight gain a must – a healthy weight will ensure your dog has good mobility and will continue to enjoy life.
Dogs have always been a loved part of our families. Just make sure that you spend time with yourdog every single day.
