Australia has a wealth of fascinating destinations that the whole family will enjoy, and some of them are best explored by car. Here’s our pick of five of the best:

Part of the 780km-long Great Southern Touring Route, the Great Ocean Road Drive officially begins at Torquay, with popular stop-offs at Apollo Bay, Warrnambool and the pretty and historic fishing town of Port Fairy. Kids will love the stories of sailors and shipwrecks and adults the spectacular scenery.
Don’t miss: Open Range Zoo at Weribee Park, world-class surfing at Bells Beach and Torquay, Surfworld Museum in Torquay, Lorne, Otway National Park, Port Campbell National Park and the famed Twelve Apostles, shipwreck spotting.It’s about an hour’s drive from Melbourne to the start of the Mornington Peninsula, and this delightful area is easily explored over the course of a few days. Mums and dads will love the region’s charming wineries and fine produce, and kids will find plenty of exciting activities to entertain them.
Don’t miss: Moonlit Sanctuary at Pearcedale, The Enchanted Maze and tube rides at Arthurs Seat, Peninsula Hot Springs (brilliant for the whole family), pick your own strawberries at Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm, wood-fired pizza lunch at La Baracca at T’Gallant Winery, a swim at Rye, Rosebud or Sorrento.This trip can take anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks or more, depending on how much you want to spread it out. Stops along the way include Berry, Huskisson, Ulladulla, Merimbula, Moruya, Tilba Tilba, Bateman’s Bay and Lakes Entrance, and there are more than 30 gorgeous National Parks and reserves dotted along the route.
Don’t miss: Grand Pacific Drive and Sea Cliff Bridge, Jamberoo Action Park, Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk, Eden Killer Whale Museum, local markets, beach swimming and surfing, fishing, kayaking, horse riding and some of the best whale-watching in Australia as whales make their way south from late September to late November.This pristine stretch of coastline takes in nearly 2000km and can be explored from Perth over the course of a week or two. Stops along the way include the Swan Valley, Geraldton, Coral Bay, Monkey Mia and Kalbarri. The nature-based activities will enthral kids and adults alike.
Don’t miss: Caversham Wildlife Park in the Swan Valley, freshly caught lobster in Geraldton, Ningaloo Marine Park where you can swim with whale sharks from April to June, hand-feeding of dolphins at Monkey Mia, whale-watching from June to October, superb snorkelling and diving, 4WDriving and tours through Cape Range National Park, living marine stromatolites at Hamelin Bay.Stretching more than 750km north from Brisbane to Hervey Bay, this gorgeous coastal route can be explored over a leisurely eight or more days, with stops at the Gold Coast, Mooloolaba and Noosa. The mix of natural beauty and manmade attractions are sure to please.
Don’t miss: Tangalooma Wild Dolphin Resort on Moreton Island, the Gold Coast theme parks, including Wet’n’Wild Water World, Dreamworld, Movie World and Sea World, Australia Zoo, Eumundi Markets and Fraser Island for some 4WD fun on the world’s largest sand island.
