Rejuvenating pot plants can be as simple as moving them to a larger pot. But, if the plant has been in its current container for too long, it’s likely to be severely pot-bound (like the palm shown here) and it will need a bit of tidying up before it goes to a wonderful new home.

Step 1: Remove plant from its old pot and use secateurs to trim any damaged or poor-looking roots.

Step 2: Use a pruning saw to remove up to one-third of the roots. Also remove fine roots circling the sides of the root ball, but make sure central roots remain intact.

Step 3: Fill a larger pot to one-third with potting mix and position the plant on top. Backfill with potting mix and add a few pre-soaked water crystals around the plant’s root system. Water well and feed with slow-release fertiliser.
