A few sheets of silver leaf, a selection of decals and some basic craft supplies are all it takes. Although the silver leaf is fragile, it's easy to apply.
You'll need:
Glass bowl
3/4 inch wash brush
Adhesive size (a type of gelatinous glue)
Cotton gloves
Silver leaf
Big soft brush - a blush brush is ideal
Satin leaf sealer
Scissors
Sheet of decals
Here's how:
Step 1 Wash and dry the bowl thoroughly. Use the wash brush to apply a smooth, even coat of adhesive size to the inside of the bowl, taking care not to overbrush. Let dry for about an hour until the size becomes clear and tacky.
Step 2 Wearing the gloves, apply the silver leaf one sheet at a time, using a large soft brush to smooth it into place. Because of the curved surface of the bowl the leaf may crack and split. Once the inside of the bowl is covered, rub it all over with the large brush to ensure the leaf adheres properly. Brush away any excess leaf. If necessary, reapply size to any cracks where the glass is showing through, let dry and use the excess leaf to cover up any blank spots.
Step 3 Use the wash brush to apply satin sealer over the leaf.
Step 4 Cut the decals from the sheet and immerse them in water to remove the backing paper. Apply the decals to the outer surface of the bowl and around the top edge to create a border. After positioning the designs, gently rub over the top with a soft cloth to remove any water marks.
Tip
Although the decals are quite water resistant, the bowl should be washed gently without soaking or scrubbing. Simply wiping the inside with a damp cloth is ideal.
The bowl should only be used for decorative purposes and should not be used for storing or serving food.
