To calculate the volume required, multiply the length by breadth of a bed to get the area in square metres. Multiply this by the depth of mulch for the volume in cubic metres.

Organic mulches, especially uncomposted types such as leaf litter and pine bark, can take nutrients, mainly nitrogen, from the soil for a short period. This is called nitrogen draw-down. To reduce this problem, add a layer of lucerne or spread an organic fertiliser on the soil before mulching.

Apply a granular soil wetter to the surface of the soil before spreading mulch.

Always remove weeds before laying your mulch.

If possible, water before and after mulching. Or try to mulch when soil is wet from rain, or when rain is expected.
