Okay, so when my friends at 20th Century Fox suggested I review Bride Wars for the magazine I tried to suppress a groan. Me and weddings, not so much. But I agreed, because I knew the film had been a big hit and that most of the rest of the population actually enjoys weddings and would love to see this flick if they missed it at the cinema.

Imagine my surprise then, when the film had me literally bellowing out loud with laughter. The boyfriend actually poked his head into the back room to see what all the ruckus was about. When he discovered it was just me watching Bride Wars he was mystified but reassured.

See, I have that whole section of my brain free. The one that women usually reserve for planning their weddings from the age of about eight or so. Not that I've put it to much use, but that brain space is there should I ever need it. Now in the film, Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Liv (Kate Hudson) are the typical white wedding girls. They've been planning their nuptials since childhood and are both set upon having the glorious event at the legendary Plaza Hotel in New York.

Which would all be fine if a series of events didn't lead to their weddings being booked on the same day. Sound simplistic or cliched? Believe me, it's not. The story is about more than wedding mania. Anyone who's seen the show Bridezillas will know how ruthless and manic women getting married can get. But in this film, Hathaway and Hudson are less bridezillas than bride guerrillas. As matrimonial fever takes them over and they lose sight of everything, including their long-lasting friendship, they launch sneaky - yet amusing - attacks against each other.

The build-up to their big days is more about friendship, relationships and side-splitting slapstick rather than the ho-hum business of wedding planning. By the time you get to the hen's night, you are totally sold on this movie and then the ending is satisfyingly dramatic and hilarious.

Girls will come away with a new appreciation for their best friend and guys will come away smug and secure in the knowledge that it is true, women do go whacko over weddings.
