French actress Emmanuelle Beart has spoken out against cosmetic surgery after a botched job left her lips noticeably disfigured.

The European beauty, best known among English speakers for her role opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible in 1996, has told French newspaper Le Monde she first “had her mouth done” when she was just 27.

Beart, now 48, says she is unlikely to undergo cosmetic surgery again, telling Le Monde that these days she is horrified by the thought of an injection.

Plastic surgery, she said “is a grave act in which you don’t necessarily foresee all the consequences.”

More and more women are opting for plastic surgery when faced with the realities of ageing, often with mixed results.

The ‘trout pout’ epidemic is spreading among a generation of women, which includes stars such as Saffron Burrows, Meg Ryan, Melanie Griffiths and Brit Ekland, that is clearly uncomfortable with growing older while working in industry that esteems a youthful appearance over experience.

Beart wishes she and her contemporaries had had the confidence to overcome the desire to ‘re-do’ the parts of their bodies that they were unhappy with.

Beart has had a long and successful film career, earning numerous nominations for the prestigious Cesar award for her acting.

The May 2003 issue of French Elle featuring a naked Beart, who was 39 years old at the time, remains the magazine’s highest selling edition.

The actress is also known for her philanthropic work, which includes a role as a UNICEF ambassador.
