Laurel Brown - National Makeup Artist for Rimmel

What are your three top tips for getting the London look?
Be bold - with colour and design. Don’t do what everyone else is doing necessarily, experiment and tweak fashion looks to make your own statement.

Don’t be too perfect - your makeup should look fresh and raw, not like you’ve spent hours and hours perfecting each feature.

Make a standout feature - pick something on your face which you connect to that particular day; brows, lips, cheeks or eyes, and bring attention to that area. Play the rest right down. This is a much more interesting way of wearing makeup than doing each feature to the same degree giving a boring, balanced, ‘safe’ and ‘overdone’ look.

Do we need to use primer under our foundation? Is it better to apply the primer using a brush or fingers?
Primers are great under foundation as they seal the moisturiser in and provide a great base for the foundation to adhere to, making it last longer. Apply with fingers just as you would a moisturizer over the whole face and eye area, or with a brush if that’s your preference.

If we peeked inside your personal makeup kit what would we find?
Dermalogica skin smoothing cream and Rimmel pencils; black, white, grey, brown and jungle green. Rimmel Stay Glossy lip gloss - ‘All Day Seduction’ and various MAC cream blushes. Make Up For Ever Professional lift concealer, Benefit Dr Feelgood buffing lip beads and silky lip balm. Rimmel ‘Sexy Curves’ mascara, MAC blot powder and Make Up For Ever Fond De Teint stick (foundation). A pencil sharpener, Rimmel professional brow pencil and Rimmel Glameyes HD eye shadow in ‘English Oak’. Hoola by Benefit bronzer, Rimmel Stay Glossy lip gloss ‘Timeless Allure’, Rimmel Lasting Finish lipstick ‘Birthday Suit’ and brushes from my own brand ‘Prep People’ (it doesn’t seem that big, honestly)!

What colour should we sport on our lips this spring?
All fresh and fruity colours (but not at once). Try Rimmel Colour Show Off lipstick in ‘Shocking Pink’ or ‘Pink Flame’ for fun, semi-matte sophistication, and Rimmel Moisture Renew lipstick ‘Rose Sorbet’ for a softer pretty pout. Use as a stain or cover with gloss for sexy, kissable lips. Another favourite is Rimmel Vinyl Max lip gloss ‘#131 Dazzle’, pretty over any pink lipstick.

What do you like most about working with Kate Moss? What’s she like?
I love working around Kate’s various Rimmel London looks, I find her face inspirational but to me it’s as much about her attitude and how that comes through in her work as her actual skin and bones (which are amazing of course). I’ve not actually done Kate’s makeup, but I have been backstage with her and she was very relaxed and normal, very much in her element, laughing and being social, no attitude what so ever.

Do you remember what sparked your first interest in make-up?
To me beauty is only really interesting when the wearer has maturity, depth, intelligence, and the courage to be a little different. Essentially, when they don’t take themselves too seriously. There are many women I admire, but my number one beauty/style icon is Cate Blanchett.

Who is your beauty style icon?

What’s the biggest make-up faux pas women make, and how can we avoid this?
I think women understand their faces so much better with experience. After experimenting and knowing what they like about their face and what they don’t like, but can live with, when they relax and accept what they naturally have, even celebrate what they have been given the confidence shows. So I see most of the faux pas in younger women who are trying to make their face something it is not i.e. changing the colour of their face with foundation to try and be lighter or darker, or wearing blush and bronzer in a design which does not follow or enhance the natural structure of their face. Over plucking eyebrows and/or wearing them in a design which does not enhance their face.

What’s the best beauty tip you have for women on the go?
Look after your skin. If you have great skin, makeup can be simple.
