Statement nails had been steadily creeping up the trend stakes before exploding onto the scene during the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Flags, faces and messages to fans were painted by nail art experts on the athletes and fans alike. Since then, model Alexa Chung has sported ladybug patterns, singer Adele has modelled a diamante manicure and Lady Gaga (never one to miss out) changes hers as often as her outfit.
