As red carpet season rolls in, the inevitable parade of glamour has me thinking about the difference between good and spectacular. There are celebs that shine brighter than any star with their perfect combination of style, grooming and attitude. This year, here are my favourite red carpet beauty stand outs and tips on how to borrow a bit of their look for your own red carpet moment.
This lady can put no beauty foot wrong. Golden glowing skin, a stunning mane of subtly balayaged hair, expertly blended super-star makeup that appears to melt on her skin. Yes, Jessica Alba is getting more gorgeous with age and knows how to dial it up for her red carpet appearances. The ultra modern tangerine lip lights up her face and is a modern twist to the classic red lip. I am obsessed with NP Set Cream Lipstick in Noosa ($22, available at Napoleon Perdis Concept Stores and Target). This bright orange lip stick was my go-to saviour over the holidays and seeing a similar shade on Jessica Alba makes me commit to it all over again. That all over body glow can be faked with Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Lotion ($7.40 at Priceline, Target, Kmart, Big W, and Price Attack).
She just gets it so right. The hair colour, style and length are flattering yet absolutely chic. Make up accentuates her assets - sparkling eyes framed with kohl liner, high cheekbones dusted with illuminator and her lived-in skin is simply made up and powdered. Impeccable grooming paired with formidable style makes this red carpet maven one of my all time favourites to watch. Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Liner ($45 from selected David Jones and Myer stores nationally) are fantastic and allow a degree of control in application. They also last up to 8 hours and don't budge.
This new mamma positively smouldered with her old Hollywood glamour style at the Golden Globes. Glossy chestnut hair, creamy nude lips and those killer brows to frame her beautiful blue eyes. A key to achieving this look is to start with a flawless complexion, subtle contouring to bring out her cheekbones and then to accentuate key features, a dusting of illuminating powder. This look may appear minimalistic but believe me when I say it takes discipline and style to show restraint. Invest in a good illuminating foundation, I love the new Teint Visionnaire Foundation with built-in concealer from Lancôme ($65, available from Myer and David Jones) and apply a highlighting powder to the cheek and brow bones. Benefit Browzings eyebrow kit ($55 from Benefit Boutique, MYER stores nationally) will help achieve those groomed, thick brows that pull this look together.
Amanda Seyfried is a starlet that's really coming into her own. This year, I absolutely loved her graduation from young Hollywood honey to sophisticated debutante. The side swept hair, the subtly smoky eyes, creamy alabaster skin and always polished make up that will no doubt help her snag more leading lady roles in the coming years. To emulate her look, make one feature of your face the focus and keep everything else artfully natural. If in doubt, the best areas to play up are the eyes and specifically the lashes. Amanda's beautiful eyes are framed with jet black mascara and a smattering of individual false lashes. Estee Lauder Sumptuous Two Tone Eye-Opening Mascara ($58, call 1800 061 326) by Tom Pecheaux is one of my all time favourite beauty helpers. The dark black mascara is perfect for framing upper lashes and adding length and fullness. The chocolate brown wand defines lower lashes and creates an eye opening effect. Clever and really flattering.
