Pool parties, BBQs, picnics, boating and beach bonfires. In summer, it feels like everyone is taking the fun outdoors. The party season is officially here and the rules for beauty are most definitely different under these hot and often sweaty conditions. Let me help guide you to your most fun, flirtiest, casual party look ever.
All experts agree that the trick here is to look like you are an effortless beauty and that your make-up and hair were ‘just thrown together’ without hours of Kardashian-style spray painting.
The main objective: Go forth lightly and if you need more, build it up!
Swap full face of foundation with tinted moisturiser with high SPF and some expert use of concealer
My favourite all time tinted moisturiser is True Solutions Tinted Daywear SPF 30 ($60, call 1800 808 993). It’s never let me down and the coverage is surprisingly awesome. I always switch to this great, outdoor- loving option when out and about and even on weekends. If I need a little extra help under the eyes or to cover a blemish, I reach for a concealer. The rules to keep in mind for outdoor beauty perfection are:
NO FOUNDATION and NO POWDER! Why? Most formulas are not geared for sweat and water. A little heat, a little splash from the pool and your make-up is dripping down your neck and nose. Not sexy. Powder also goes cakey and strange. If you do tend to go a little shiny down the t-zone, use a specialist primer or moisturiser such as Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Stay Matte Hydrator to absorb excess oil and create a shine-free base. Clinique Pore Refining Solutions Instant Perfector can be kept in your bag and used instead of powder to keep shiny zones at bay even over make-up! ($44 and $70, available from David Jones, Myer, Terry White and selected independent pharmacies).
Flesh will be on display. Have a plan!
It’s all about preparation ladies. There’s still time to tone up and while I don’t advocate beauty lotions in lieu of exercise, there are some little helpers that when used in addition to your Pilates lessons and early morning runs can get a girl where she wants faster. Medik8 Lipomelt Forte ($91.30 Spas, Medi-Spas, Salons) is one of the very best. Used twice a day, after 4 to 6 weeks you will see a definite improvement in skin firmness and even a visible reduction in orange peel skin around the bottom and tummy that comes with cellulite. I’m a fan and if you are thinking of hitting the festivals in shorty shorts, you need to meet this little lady.
How are the feet? Most likely you will be in strappy sandals or bare feet. A full pedicure is in order. I suggest taking it to the professionals at least four times a year but if you are on a budget, my top tip is to get busy with a pedi-paddle and slather feet in a treatment cream such as Dr Scholl foot cream to remove dead skin around heels and even toes. If you don’t have time for giving yourself a great at home pedi, cheat by using a super bright, almost fluro shade on the toes. This always looks amazing against tanned feet and really doesn’t need to be perfectly applied. I love Australis nail colours and OPI have a kit of mini fluoro shades ($19.95 leading beauty salons and David Jones stores Australia wide) that you can mix and match back with your outfit.
Work on your tan - fake of course!
Hollywood- based celebrity make-up artist Glenn Nutley says: "Start the night before by applying a light spray of fake tan to your face and your whole body to warm up your completion and get that sexy summer glow. A lot of Hollywood starlets don’t even wash off the excess for evening events - they just spray it on and out the door. However, if it’s a pool-party you’re attending, it’s best to do it the night before and shower before going to avoid an embarrassing incident."
Product to try: Invisible Zinc Jet Set Tan ($24.95 David Jones, Myer, Priceline, Terry White) gives a great natural colour and is also buildable. The fine mist gives even coverage and is fine enough to even use on the face.
Less is more
With the lip and cheeks, you want to go with multi-tasking and melt-proof make-up. You also definitely want to favour gels, stains, water-based and waterproof formulations.
For lips and cheeks, consider going for a liquid stain. Benefit cosmetics have a choice of wonderful colours. I am mad for Cha Cha stain ($53 Benefit Boutique, MYER stores nationally) in a flattering orange that suits everyone. I also like the Model-Co Lip and cheek stain ($34 Available online at www.modelco.com.au and at David Jones and selected independents).
