Sally Fitzgibbons Blog - Preparing for the 2012 Season

Posted by Sally Fitzgibbons - Mon, 23 Jan 2012 14:52

At this stage I am deep into pre-season training and readying myself for an explosive start to the new season and launching a new World Title campaign. It is an exciting time for Women’s Surfing at the moment, a new generation has moved its way onto the World Tour. All the girls are young and hungry to win. 2012 will see five fresh new rookies on Tour, which will make for some very exciting matchups and some incredible displays of surfing in those pressure situations.

It is unfortunate to be looking at another shortened season with only seven events on the calendar all in the space of six months. Our sport is crying out for the past days where the Women’s Tour had upward of twelve events counting toward the World Title. I believe with the abundance of talent on tour right now we deserve more and better stages to perform on.

We will all make the most of what we have at the moment and I know that I will have to hit the ground running to get that great start you need to hunt down the number 1 spot. This will be my fourth year on the world tour and I feel I have been building and progressing at a level that I am really happy with. Coming oh so close last year has definitely put the fire in the belly to throw everything I’ve got at this season and see what I can make of it. Surfing is surfing, at times the waves roll your way and other times you are left searching for that one last ride, but that is why I love it. Everyday is different in my office and so I have a new challenge to face every time I paddle out.

The first leg of the Tour kicks off with a new addition to the schedule, the Australian Open at Manly, a six star qualifying event. This will serve as a great warm up for the first World Tour event, the Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks, Queensland, kicking off later in the month on the 25th of Feb. There is so much to see and do around this event with art, music and surf film premiers. The Australian surfing competition season continues right though to mid April so come along and check one out or jump online at www.australianopenofsurfing.com to catch all the action. I hope you can get involved and start to love the sport as much as I do!
