Sally Fitzgibbons Blog - The Challenges

Posted by Sally Fitzgibbons - Mon, 23 Jan 2012 14:08

I learnt a few new things that were very challenging during the break. I was introduced to the sport of snowboarding by our golden girl of the snow Torah Bright. It was so much fun and a bag of laughs. Having to put so many layers of clothing and equipment on I often left something off or couldn’t get my goggles on and had to get Torah to help, which made me feel a little clumsy. Roxy thought it would be funny to dress me in their brightest snow attire available so I wouldn’t get lost on the slopes. I was the person dressed in all the new gear and no idea. After my brief intro to the sport I was definitely hooked and can’t wait for another winter break.

The other challenging activity I was introduced to was quite a different sport but linked in with surfing bigger waves. I did a Red Bull training camp in Hawaii on the big island where myself and one other team rider learnt how to Free Dive. It was such a surreal experience, pushing my body and mind to the absolute limits and a bit more, even blacking out at times. It was all about learning the physiology of breath holding and how to handle big wipe outs in the surf. By the end of the camp I was able to hold my breath for 4mins 40secs and dive down over 110ft on one breath, which was exhilarating.

One of my favourite moments on the camp was when we were out in the ocean diving down and a tourist submarine cruised passed whilst I was on the bottom sitting by a shipwreck. I was so excited I nearly blew all my bubbles out, epic experience.

To finish out my crazy adventures I chased a swell to Fiji on my way to end of season commitments in Hawaii and surfed a wave called Cloud Break for the first time. It was amazing getting barrelled with only a few others out. A few days into the trip I took a beating on the reef and suffered a fractured wrist and cuts all up my hand, arm and shoulder. Getting injured is the unfortunate part of surfing or any sport for that matter and it’s tough trying to rest and stay off it for so long, especially through summer when you are itching to get back in the water.
