Betty Cuthbert, the golden girl of Australian running has 4 Olympic gold medals (of Australia's 19 gold in athletics). Cuthbert took over the mantle from Shirley Strickland with dominating performances in the 100m, 200m & 4x 100m (WR) in Melbourne in1956. Injury hampered her Olympic aspirations in 1960, before a comeback in 1964 in the first ever women's Olympic 400m saw her 4th Olympic gold and cemented her as an Australian legend.
