Ex-AFL star Glenn Archer is running a half marathon to support HeartKids.
What event will you be competing in at The Age Run Melbourne and why did you choose that distance?
21km half marathon as I love running!
Was endurance running a key part of your cross training during your career as a professional AFL player?Yes
How have you been preparing for the event – have you followed a strict training regime or made any nutritional changes?Getting up at 5am to run through the hills around home. Some days I run 5km and others 7km depending on what I have on with work. I eat well balanced healthy foods so there has been no changes to my regime.
Why did you choose Heart Kids as your charity to support? My daughter is a heart kid and I am an Ambassador for HeartKids, an extraordinary charity that supports the heart kid babies and children and their families and wanted to show my support for all their help by raising funds. Be great if people can sponsor me to make a difference in these families lives.
Have any of your four kids showed signs of following in your sporting footsteps? My eldest daughter Maddison (heart kid) plays netball, my other daughter Abbey plays basketball and my son Jackson plays football, cricket and basketball. My youngest daughter Remy will start sport next year when she starts school. Be interesting to see where their journey takes them in sport.
What advice would you give to parents to encourage their kids to get involved in sport?Very important for parents to support their kids to play sport as it helps them to be healthy and builds a great relationship with them. Sport allows parents to have fun with their kids bringing the family closer together.
What 3 songs will you include on your running playlist?‘Eye of the Tiger’ by Survivor, ‘Banana Pancakes’ by Jack Johnson and ‘Cold Hard Bitch’ by Jet.
