Police confirmed that Searls's life support was turned off this morning after spending five days in a coma in a Gold Coast hospital.

Searls, 23, was put in a coma after he attempted to dive from the first floor of Billy’s Beach House into the pool.

He missed the pool and landed on the cement, causing critical head and back injuries.

The daredevil sportsman was celebrating after breaking a world record on Friday by performing a series of massive BMX jumps.

Sponsor Paul Everest said Searls was celebrating the record-breaking feat when he jumped off the balcony.

Tributes started to pour in on social networking sites this morning, with the tight knit BMX community devastated.

"Dane. The ballsiest rider going around. Bmx will never be the same without you. R.I.P." one post said.

"RIP Dane Searls, another one of the greatest taken too young, u will be missed mate."

"RIP Dane Searls such an awesome rider, thoughts out to his family and friends,'' another said.

"I've never met the guy but have been inspired by his videos and dedication... BMX lost a great rider.''

So much beauty in his riding- he truly defied gravity- a human who learned to fly with hills and a bike- watching his skill, his fearlessness and to see that these abilities lead him to believe he was indestructible- his fatal flaw- the definition of tragedy. I feel for his family and friends.

He wasn't satisfied with setting a world record, he had to go for a Darwin award too. A very selfish thing to do - he could have killed some of the people who were sitting poolside if he had landed on any of them.

Dougel wake up you fool. I find it difficult to believe that you have never made the wrong choice in any facet of your life, and you sit there and judge this young man and disrespect his friends and family. This young man had one lapse in judgement and paid for it with his life, yet somehow you still sit there and disregard everything he managed to achieve in the short time that he was here. The good dye young. I am willing to bet that you will live to a ripe old age you foolish insensitive childish insignificant little person.
