With the dramatic rise in popularity of off road races over the past few exposing my so-far haphazard approach to training. I was though be out there having a go.
years, we are spoiled with choice most weekends to participate in an event.
There are Fun Runs, Trail Runs, Mountain Bike Enduros, Ocean Swims,
Orienteering and Rogaining, Short Course, One Day, Weekend or Multi Day
Multisport, Adventure or Expedition Races. So where to start?
First of all, set an achievable target.
This is going to be a
long year so it's not too smart for me to throw myself into an event that is
beyond me physically or that I do not have the skills to finish. Like this incredible event in Patagonia.
Multi Day Expedition races demand fitness levels and skills that are probably a little beyond me this early in my year of adventure.
Many adventure races cater for the first timer, providing kayaks and other specialist equipment and encouraging all comers.
The Anaconda events later in the year from Rapid Ascent are great formats for first timers who can tackle the whole event or do a leg in relay. Next month I'll be lining up as part of a team for the Rapid Ascent Marysville2Melbourne, the first of many events using my Golden Ticket.
So how do I find the right event? For that matter how do I find any event?
Luckily the good people at Banzai have a growing list of events right here
online. Just click the events tab at the top of the page. In addition to this
site, I've found a few online resources that keep pretty up to date with events
on in Australia year round. Here are a couple of biggies:
Adventurerace.com.au
For events in Australia, this calendar seems to be very comprehensive and grows
every week. It has a long list of Adventure Race, Multisport and Mountain
BikeEvents. The format is really easy to navigate and has links to the event
websites.
Sleepmonsters.com.au
This site is great for finding Adventure race events in Australia and
abroad.
Both sites provide links to training and gear information, allow you to
register for updates and are a good starting point.
My first event as Banzai Adventurer.
I entered the In2Adventure
DirtFest Victoria. I was sporting the official Banzai Adventurer Race Kit and
