No iPod? No problem
Forced into a tuneless 10-K? Here's how to cope:
Be your own iPod, no matter how rusty your pipes are.
On barren courses, such as the lava fields in Hawaii, where there is little to look at and iPods are prohibited, I pick a song to sing to myself, like "Violently Happy" by Bjork. Singing words helps me breathe more rhythmically on each inhale and exhale.
Count, but only to 10.
When I'm exhausted during the last miles of a race, I start counting my strides as a distraction. One through 10 and back. Numbers beyond 10 waste breath.
Don't think about the finish.
Instead of thinking about how many miles you have left, think about getting to the next aid station, tree, friend, or family member as swiftly as possible. A strong mind translates into a stronger body.
