Celebrity guests who dropped into radio duo Hamish Blake and Andy Lee's on-air Logies spit roast BBQ on Friday, May 2 in Melbourne weren't exempt from traditional expectations. "I'm sick of Australians just pandering to anyone that's famous, going 'we'll lay it on, you get it for free, you present at the Logies, you get a gift basket,' blah blah blah," says Blake, who, with his co-host Lee, asked everyone to bring a plate. Amid Natalie Blair's fairy bread, Adam Hills's Jatz crackers with cheese and paté and Callan Mulvey's Vegemite rolls was Megan Gale's sticky date pudding ("Andy likes it," says Lee's model girlfriend) and Shelley Craft's chocolate and gingernut log - "An old favourite, very '70s, perfect for a spit roast," says Craft, who reported on the Logies red carpet for the Nine telecast. The spit went down so well, Million Dollar Wheel of Fortune's Tim Campbell (who admitted he'll be wearing his fake Bangkok-purchased Gucci belt and Bulgari cufflinks on May 4) suggested it replace the usual fare on Logies night "instead of having a kebab on the way home."

The downside of the extensive spread was that a food fight erupted, started by Getaway's Jules Lund (who also reported with Craft on the red carpet). "Patti Newton's potato salad ended up on my nose," says Lee, who was smeared with food for the rest of the show, while Blake stayed relatively clean, "which is strange," observes Gale, "because he's so not like that, Andy is usually the neat and tidy one."

After the show, WHO was exclusively invited to an intimate after-party at a St Kilda pub, and talk turned to everybody's favourite topic - Logies fashion. Gale chatted about her Roberto Cavalli frock she bought in Italy and had altered in Sydney ("they slashed it at the back, now it looks hot"), the Logies are her last chance to wear it before the end of its season, otherwise she'll have to wait 5-7 years for it to become vintage. Blake recounted how his girlfriend, Anna Jennings-Edquist, took photos of her dress options on her digital camera. "Your job as a boyfriend there is to get really excited" he says, "and when she showed me The Dress, I had to go 'Oh my God, that is stunning, that makes all the other dresses in the world jealous,' and I overacted a bit." As for their own outfits, a fitting at Calibre had the boys suited up in preparation for their stint as Nine's official green room reporters. "I went to Calibre and the bloke came in and said 'Put it on. Turn around. Perfect' and that was the only five or six words he spoke," recounted Lee. "I felt like I was out of a scene from The Devil Wears Prada." Kinda like the Logies itself, really.

Hamish and Andy spoke exclusively to WHO Senior Editor Simone Casey at the Spit Roast after-show party at Stage Two, St Kilda, May 2, 2008 WHO senior editor. Read the interview
