Snack attacks 'backfire' says nutritionist

May 27 08:24am
- Snacking instead of the standard three meals does not help weight loss as in most people’s experiences, snacking leads to overeating.

Nutritionist Matt O'Neill says portion sizes need to be controlled but overall, eating smaller meals throughout the day, or ‘grazing’, is not effective.

“The result at the end of the day is more calories, more kilojoules, and the whole thing just backfires.”

The best snacks to eat are

  • Fruit,
  • nuts,
  • tuna,
  • yoghurt and
  • soup .

Matt says it’s also worth remembering that particular snack foods are a threat to anyone’s diet. “Vending machines are not your friends.”

If you are looking for what to avoid – remember the three C’s: Cookies, cake and chocolate.

Most people save their biggest meal for dinner without realising you do not need the kilojoules when you sleep. Breakfast should be seen as the most important meal of the day. Snacks can work as good breakers as long as you work that into your daily allowance.

“If you are likely to overeat at your main meal, the practice can be effective.”

I tend to disagree. It all depends on the body type. I have found that if I have 5 to 6 smaller meals per day I don't binge and crave sugar as much - esp when adding in protein, I think you need to differentiate between snacking and having smaller meals - everyone is different.

The 5 or 6 meal a day plan promotes the intake of only healthy foods, preferably fresh, adding up to the same amount of daily calories recommended for that particular person and dividing the calories into five, or 6, meals instead of 3. It works for a great number of people so don't knock it.

I agree with the other 2 comments. I was having problems with my stomach, my skin and fluctuating weight until I did the 5-6 small meals a day. I don't actually feel the need to "snack" during the day as I eat lovely healthy food all the time. It works for me!

What a load of rubbish, snacking having several meals a day is very good for you. The only way I have lost weight and kept it off is from snacking and having several meals.

Kurt Fearnley: I was relief teaching in Blayney when I met Kurt as a young school boy. The first thing that struck me was his smile and contagious positive outlook at all times. I see nothing has changed with this outstanding Australian. Although I never saw him again, it is a testament to the power of his personality that I have not forgotten him more than 15 years later.
